American Panda by Gloria Chao
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This was a good story, overall. I enjoyed it, though the end definitely didn’t blow me away.
I liked taking a peek at cultural differences, though I feel like this fed into all the expected stereotypes, when I was really hoping for something fresher or a bit different. I’ve already read the overbearing-Asian-parents- insist-their-teenager- has -to-become-a-doctor trope so many times that I confess I’m a bit tired of it. There has to be more diversity in parents’ attitudes than this. In that regard, this isn’t a particularly original story, though I enjoyed Mei. She had a unique voice, and I found her journey to be interesting, overall.
