My rating: 4 of 5 stars

So I am going to confess that I mostly skimmed this book, because my least favorite genres are How To, self-help, and memoir, and this kind of covers all 3 for a writer. However, I decided to read it anyway, as it came highly recommended, and I’m trying to convince myself to read more books about writing.

That being said, almost everything I did read was interesting, relatable, and often funny. It couldn’t bring myself to read it from cover to cover, but that was due to the above mentioned personal issues and not due to the quality of the material.

Even just skimming, I read quite a few things that I found to be helpful, insightful, or funny, so I count the experience as a win. I picked out the writing tips, read the funny anecdotes, and plowed forward. It was just a bit text heavy for me (despite being a relatively small book), because I personally struggle with those 3 genres. People who like some or all of those genres would probably consider it to be a gem.
